Hayden's Story

Hayden volunteering for WA’s State Emergency Services during the recent flooding event in the Pilbara and Kimberley regions.

At 22, Hayden joined ReNew Property Maintenance after struggling with years of unemployment and was rapidly losing hope and motivation. Starting his first shift at ReNew in 2020, Hayden has gone on to accomplish an incredible amount in this short period of time. We caught up with him recently to discuss his time at ReNew and where it’s taken him today.

"I had been looking for a job for almost two years prior to that, but I couldn't find anything. Then this opportunity came up, so I took it and started working with ReNew from then on. Shannon and all the bosses saw potential in me to be better. That gave me the motivation to keep working harder, and yeah, eventually after I put in the hours, they started giving me more time on the tools which was a great feeling."

Starting at ReNew on three days a week and gradually progressing to full-time employment, Hayden’s confidence, skillset and rapport with staff and colleagues began to grow. 

"Hayden's growth and development during his time at ReNew was remarkable. Before joining ReNew, Hayden came to us facing significant challenges in his life that had him set him on a difficult path. In a normal workplace, he may not have been an obvious candidate to take a chance on. But ReNew is about more than training young people to be landscapers or labourers, it’s about building a sense of pride in young people who’ve lost it along the way, rebuilding self-confidence and that sense of accomplishment that you get from having a job and feeling you’ve done good work. That was certainly the case with Hayden.” - Shannon Barnes, ReNew Property Maintenance.

The ReNew supervisors weren’t the only ones who noticed Hayden’s outstanding work ethic. After just seven months of work, a client of ReNew’s, the Town of Mosman Park, offered Hayden a job in their Parks Department where he has been working full-time for nearly two years. In addition to this role, he has been volunteering with the SES (pictured above) to support clean up efforts in far north WA following a major flooding event at the end of 2022, and he occasionally works part-time with the Australian Army, all with an eye toward his ultimate goal of joining the WA Police Force.  

"If I didn't get that work with ReNew, I would not be where I am right now. That’s for sure. It was a big stepping stone for me because at the time, I wasn't motivated at all to really work, you know. ReNew gave me the confidence to do all of this. I also found that to get a job - it's easier to get a job if you already have a job. Employers see that and it means something.” 

Despite Hayden’s busy schedule, he remains committed to giving back to the community that supported him on his journey.

"I've said to Shannon before, if he ever wants me to come in and have a chat with the other young fellas and all that about it...if it helps motivate them, or anything, you know, I'm happy to do that too." 

Hayden's achievements and ambitions for the future are a source of great pride for his colleagues and mentors at ReNew. We continue to cheer him on as he pursues his dreams, and we are confident that he will achieve even greater success in the future.

Cape2Cape fundraiser reaching the far corners of WA

At the end of 2022, Dismantle’s Cape2Cape Charity Team had raised over $50,000 to enable greater reach into regional and remote communities, where risk and disadvantage are significantly higher. Thanks to the continued generosity and support of event organiser, Ironman, Dismantle’s team of 15 riders conquered 4 days of some of the most gruelling and spectacular off-road trails at Australia’s largest competitive mountain-biking event. Since then, Dismantle has put the funds to work reaching at-risk young people in regional and remote communities from Exmouth to Leonora.

The goal was to create a funding pool for BikeRescue program subsidies, so the most under-resourced and highest need communities could access support. Our Charity Team did an incredible job enabling this impact and the smiles of each of the 100 young people we’ll be able to reach as a result, belongs to every donor, customer or rider who got behind the fundraiser. We are thrilled to announce that because of the funds raised at Cape2Cape, six subsidised regional BikeRescue programs have already been allocated before June of this year, with a further 5 expected in the second half.

Dismantle hosts landmark impact investing event

Dismantle were delighted to host and be the first featured social enterprise of the newly established Investing for Impact WA group, which seeks to bring together a network socially conscious organisations, investors, philanthropists and interested parties, and connect them to social enterprises making waves in WA.

The driving force behind the working group; Philanthropy Australia, Impact Seed, Adam Levin, Sophie Chamberlain of the Spinifex Trust. Responding to the rapidly emerging corporate interest in ESG and impact investing, the collective of social-sector representatives have set out to play middle man between investors and non-profit organisations and social enterprises looking to scale.

As the peak body for philanthropy, we provide advocacy, networking, services and resources to the philanthropic and not-for-profit sector. It made a lot of sense for Philanthropy Australia to work with Dismantle and others to activate a working group and a network of enthusiastic and generous individuals, who now call ourselves Investing for Impact WA. - Dylan Smith, Philanthropy Australia

Providing insight into the impact investment, social enterprise and philanthropy sectors, we heard from Dylan Smith (Philanthropy Australia), Alexandra Humphry (Impact Seed) and Sophie Chamberlain of Spinifex Trust.

Dismantle CEO, Pat Ryan, then presented an investment opportunity, highlighting the progress and future of our social enterprise, ReNew Property Maintenance.

We were absolutely thrilled with the calibre of the group that came to the event on 14th March. As well as a game-changing investment for Dismantle, this event signifies a landmark moment in the social enterprise sector development that still has a long way to go.

ReNew partakes in White Box’ groundbreaking national 'payment-by-outcomes' pilot to guide Department for Social Services

In a huge step forward for Australia’s federal approach to employment services for vulnerable cohorts, White Box Enterprises, in close consultation with the Department of Social Services, has published their first round of results on the pioneering $3.8M, three-year study into social enterprise efficacy and outcomes.

The 15 social enterprises participating in the trial, ReNew being the only WA representative, will see up to 170 award-wage jobs created for people living with a disability. The social enterprises will receive outcomes-based payments when participating employees maintain employment after 6, 12 and 18 months, with additional payments if the candidate has successfully transitioned onto further employment.

We know, and were reminded at the Jobs Summit in 2022, that there are persistently high numbers of people with different abilities who are finding it difficult to access work. While in its early stages, this Trial is proving that jobs-focused social enterprises create tremendously positive work experiences and are part of the solution to helping close this gap.”

The study is the first of its kind to investigate the effectiveness of jobs-focused social enterprises delivering long-term outcomes for people living with disabilities.

We are so proud to be a stakeholder in this innovative scheme, laying the groundwork for a new way for employment services to be delivered in Australia. Work Integrated Social Enterprises (WISE) are highly effective at supporting people who have multiple and complex barriers in to the workforce, and can achieve outstanding outcomes at a lower cost than those services who rely solely on government funding to operate.

As the only organisastion from WA taking part in the scheme we're also proud to pioneer this in our state and represent the emerging social enterprise sector at a national level.
